Further Mathematics

Further Maths is for you if you have also chosen to take A Level Mathematics, you enjoy the subject and want to take it further as you are very good at mathematics and enjoy solving difficult problems. A Level Maths and Further Maths can lead you into any field at degree or in employment, for example, Actuarial, Accountancy, Business and Finance, Surveying, Engineering, Information Technology, Environmental, Education and Scientific.

We are a member of the Further Maths Support Programme which organises and encourages collaborative working between other local centres offering this A Level. Further Maths will occupy slightly fewer timetabled lessons than other subjects as you will be taking Maths alongside.

Course Content

Pure Maths – 2 exams of 1 hour 30 minutes, both worth 25% of final mark. Topics include: Complex Numbers, Hyperbolic Functions, Polar Coordinates, Further Algebra and Functions, Further Calculus, Differential Equations.

Applied Maths – 2 exams of 1 hour 30 minutes, both worth 25% of final mark. Each exam will be on a different topic:

Decision – Algorithms on Graph Theory, Linear Programming, Critical Path Analysis.

Mechanics – Momentum and Impulse, Elastic Strings, Springs and Elastic Energy, Elastic Collisions in 2D.
